Government Aims to Foster Digital Job Opportunities
In a move to create more digital job opportunities for Kenyan youth, the government is actively engaging with TikTok to introduce monetization features for local content creators. This initiative follows Meta’s recent announcement of similar tools for Kenyan creators, demonstrating a growing focus on empowering young people to earn income online.
Mary Kerema, the Secretary of ICT, e-government, and Digital Economy, emphasized the importance of this step in aligning Kenya’s strategy with the global trend of digital job creation. She highlighted the potential for young Kenyans to leverage online platforms to become productive and financially independent.
During the launch of TikTok’s inaugural Safety Advisory Council for sub-Saharan Africa, Kerema commended the platform for its commitment to community guidelines and stakeholder involvement. She emphasized the importance of ensuring that content regulations are both fair and understandable.
While there have been speculations about TikTok launching monetization in Kenya by June 2024, a TikTok spokesperson clarified that a specific timeline has not been set. However, Kenyan creators can currently explore earning opportunities through features like live gifting, video gifts, and brand partnerships.
The Kenyan government is actively pushing to expedite the process of introducing direct monetization options for TikTok creators. Talks with TikTok are scheduled to begin next week, and there is optimism for a swift resolution that will benefit the country’s young talent.
