How to detect if Your Android Phone is Being Tracked by an AirTag and What to Do

Apple’s Tracker Detect app enables Android users to scan for unknown AirTags that might be tracking them.

 Introduction

AirTags are a convenient tool for keeping track of valuable items, but unfortunately, they have also been misused by stalkers and thieves to track people. To address this, Apple has released the Tracker Detect app on the Google Play Store, which alerts users if an AirTag is following them.

The Role of Tracker Detect on Android

Even though Google’s Find My Device network now includes an unknown-tracker alert system for Android, Apple’s Tracker Detect app remains a valuable tool for extra security. Here’s how you can utilize this app to scan for AirTags on your Android device.

Using Tracker Detect to Scan for AirTags

Tracker Detect Detect is a free app available on the Google Play Store that allows Android users to search for and track items compatible with Apple’s Find My network, including AirTags. The app works without needing an Apple ID.

1. Download and Install Tracker Detect:

Download the app from the Google Play Store, turn on Bluetooth, open the app, agree to the terms and conditions, and press the blue Scan button to start searching for nearby AirTags.

2. Scanning Process:

When you open Tracker Detect for the first time, you’ll need to grant it access to Bluetooth. The app will then scan for about a minute. If it detects an AirTag nearby, it will show as “Unknown AirTag.” If no AirTags are found, you can retry the scan since the tracker must be separated from its owner for at least 15 minutes to appear.

Just hit Scan and search for nearby AirTags.

What to Do if an AirTag is Following You

If Tracker Detect identifies an AirTag that has been near you for at least 10 minutes, the app will allow you to play a sound from the AirTag, making it easier to locate.

1. Identify the AirTag:

If you find an AirTag, determine whether it’s there by accident. If “Lost Mode” is enabled, you can tap and hold your NFC-compatible Android phone to the white side of the tag to access information on returning it.

2. Handling Suspicious AirTags:

If you suspect the AirTag is tracking you intentionally, you can view its serial number by tapping it with your phone. This information can be useful if you decide to contact law enforcement. Additionally, you can open the back cover of the AirTag to find the serial number inside.

 Conclusion

While the Tracker Detect app may seem redundant with Google’s new alert system, having multiple tools can enhance your safety. By using Tracker Detect, you can ensure that your Android phone is free from unwanted tracking and take appropriate steps if you discover an AirTag following you.
