In a groundbreaking move aimed at bridging the digital divide, Benue State has teamed up with Google to train 10,000 youths in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This initiative, led by Governor Hyacinth Alia, underscores the state’s commitment to empowering its younger population with the digital skills needed to succeed in today’s economy.
Empowering Youths for the Digital Future
Governor Alia, in his announcement, highlighted the critical importance of the ICT training program. The initiative is not just about education; it’s about transforming lives by equipping young people with the necessary skills to excel in the digital world. “In partnership with Google, we have commenced the training of 10,000 youth in Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This initiative is designed to equip you with the skills needed to compete in the digital economy, opening doors to endless opportunities,” Governor Alia stated.
The program is particularly significant in Benue, where many youths face challenges such as unemployment and lack of opportunities. By providing these essential digital skills, the government aims to take young people off the streets and into a world of possibilities, contributing to the broader goal of socio-economic development.
Addressing Social Vices Through Education
In addition to the ICT training, Governor Alia addressed the pressing issue of criminality among the youth. He urged those involved in negative activities such as drug abuse, cultism, and internet fraud to seize this opportunity to turn their lives around. “I urge the youths who are involved in all kinds of criminality in the State to lay down their arms, embrace peace, and choose the right paths. Drug abuse, cultism, internet fraud, popularly known as ‘Yahoo-Yahoo,’ and other social vices are a cankerworm I would never allow them to indulge in,” he said.

This appeal is a crucial part of the overall strategy to combat crime and promote peace in the state. By offering positive alternatives through ICT training, the government is actively working to reduce the allure of criminal activities among the youth.
Additional Youth Development Initiatives
Beyond the ICT training, Governor Alia unveiled several other initiatives designed to further support youth development in Benue State. One of these is the UN Volunteer Scheme, in which some Benue youths will soon participate. This collaboration with the United Nations aims to provide young people with the opportunity to engage in meaningful volunteer work, enhancing their skills and employability.
Another exciting development is the construction of a fashion hub in the state. This creative space is intended to nurture talent and provide a platform for young entrepreneurs to thrive. “We are also constructing a fashion hub, a space where creativity meets opportunity. This hub will not only encourage creativity but also create jobs with a view to fostering a new generation of fashion entrepreneurs from Benue,” Governor Alia revealed.
Commitment to Youth Development
Governor Alia’s administration has made it clear that youth development is a top priority. The partnership with Google is just one example of the many efforts being made to empower the younger generation. “We understand that the development of our youth is a panacea for the development of Benue State. This is why we have embarked on several initiatives aimed at empowering you and creating opportunities for your growth,” Alia stated.
National Initiatives Supporting Digital Skills
It’s worth noting that the Benue State initiative aligns with broader national efforts to equip Nigerian youths with digital skills. The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has also launched the Digital Job Creation for Youths (DJCY) program, which is part of the National Digital Economic Policy and Strategy (NDEPS 2020-2030).
The DJCY program focuses on enhancing the employability of youths across Nigeria by providing them with digital skills and fostering self-employment. To date, over 2,000 youths have benefited from this program, with an additional 600 currently in training. Participants receive comprehensive support, including free accommodation, training in digital skills and business development, and essential tools such as laptops and internet connectivity.
Conclusion: A Bright Future for Benue Youths
The partnership between Benue State and Google represents a significant step forward in empowering the state’s youth. By investing in ICT training and other development initiatives, the government is laying the foundation for a brighter, more prosperous future for the younger generation. With continued support and collaboration, Benue youths are well on their way to becoming leaders in the digital economy, contributing to the overall growth and development of the state.
