NITDA and NYSC Launch Digital Literacy Drive to Empower Millions Across 12 Nigerian States

Empowering Nigeria’s Future: NITDA and NYSC Kickstart Digital Skills Program in 12 States

In a major step toward enhancing digital skills, the National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has partnered with the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to roll out the first phase of its “Digital Literacy for All” (DL4ALL) initiative. This ambitious program aims to provide essential digital skills to millions of Nigerians by leveraging the reach of NYSC corps members.

Digital Literacy Initiative Kicks Off in 12 States

The DL4ALL initiative has been launched in 12 Nigerian states, including the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Kebbi, Jigawa, Yobe, Gombe, Kwara, Ekiti, Osun, Cross River, Bayelsa, Abia, and Ebonyi. These regions have already begun awareness sessions to introduce both NYSC members and local communities to the goals of the program. This initiative forms a crucial part of Nigeria’s larger goal to achieve 70% digital literacy by 2027, which will greatly enhance employability and participation in the country’s digital economy.

Youth Corps Members as Digital Literacy Champions

One of the core elements of the DL4ALL initiative is the strategic use of NYSC members to serve as digital literacy champions. According to Kashifu Inuwa Abdullahi, Director-General of NITDA, “These young graduates are positioned across Nigeria to act as key digital literacy advocates in their communities.” This approach not only extends digital skills training to remote and underserved areas but also builds community trust, as the trainers are embedded within their local environments.

Hands-On Digital Skills Training in Local Communities

The program taps into the existing NYSC structure to deliver hands-on training across a variety of digital skills. Corps members are tasked with training local residents, ensuring that even the most rural communities can gain access to digital literacy. This model of using locally stationed trainers is a unique aspect of the DL4ALL initiative, providing a decentralized method to broaden digital knowledge and bridge the digital divide.

Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan: Fostering a Digital Economy

The DL4ALL initiative is part of NITDA’s broader Strategic Roadmap and Action Plan (SRAP 2.0), which emphasizes fostering digital literacy and talent cultivation throughout Nigeria. By empowering citizens with foundational digital skills, the program seeks to boost employability, increase access to essential services, and drive economic growth within Nigeria’s emerging digital economy.

NITDA’s goal is to train 30 million Nigerians, particularly the youth, through this initiative. This effort aligns with the country’s overarching goal to ensure that 95% of the population is digitally literate by 2030. As digital literacy becomes increasingly critical for accessing economic opportunities and participating in global markets, this initiative is vital for Nigeria’s future.

Local Trust and Community Integration

The decentralized approach of DL4ALL, which relies on corps members embedded within local communities, is expected to foster trust and engagement. The trainers, often seen as integral parts of their communities, are likely to generate greater buy-in from local residents, making it easier to spread digital knowledge to even the most remote and underserved populations. This community-driven model enhances the program’s effectiveness and reach.

Progress on Cybersecurity and Blockchain Initiatives

In addition to the DL4ALL initiative, NITDA has made strides in other areas of digital infrastructure and cybersecurity. In 2023, NITDA partnered with the Chartered Institute of Forensic and Certified Fraud Investigator of Nigeria (CIFCFIN) to develop the nation’s first cybersecurity laboratory. Although the lab’s opening was scheduled for 2024, updates on its progress are still pending.

Furthermore, in an effort to combat certificate fraud, NITDA announced plans to begin verifying NYSC certificates using blockchain technology. This innovation is intended to curb the widespread forgery and fraudulent issuance of NYSC certificates. While the blockchain verification project was announced in August 2023, concrete details and updates on its public rollout are still limited.

The Path to Digital Literacy and Economic Growth

As Nigeria pushes towards becoming a leader in the digital economy, initiatives like DL4ALL play a pivotal role in bridging the digital divide. Through its collaborative efforts with NYSC and strategic partnerships across sectors, NITDA aims to ensure that digital literacy becomes accessible to all, thereby enhancing Nigeria’s global competitiveness and fostering inclusive growth.

By leveraging local youth and a decentralized approach, the DL4ALL initiative is set to leave a lasting impact on Nigeria’s journey toward widespread digital literacy and economic empowerment.
